About the Work

Alabaster, traces of pigment and gilding, 42 x 13 cm

This angel from the Rau Collection for UNICEF is a messenger of God in the form of a handsome, smiling young man. The wings are visible above his shoulders only when seen from the front, whereas they almost recede behind his body when viewed from other angles. The detailed representation and the carefully sculpted wings identify this sculpture as originating in the circle of the famous Italian sculptor Nicola Pisano, by whose successors it was created.
