Christiane Löhr

„If you put four stalks of grass
into one room, then that's a radical, risky attitude.“

In a large-scale exhibition, internationally renowned artist Christiane Löhr (*1965) creates a unique sculptural and installation cosmos with materials from nature. She uses flying seeds, plant stems, burdocks, tree blossoms and animal hair to construct her organic-abstract works, which are reminiscent of architectures, landscapes or vessels.

In a surprising way, she transforms the ephemeral materials into precisely constructed, delicate as well as expansive sculptures. The exhibition brings together nearly 80 works from four decades.

In addition to sculptures and drawings, three large-scale installations created especially for the show, as well as a number of the artist's earlier, rarely shown works, are on view. Christiane Löhr's vegetative-architectural spatial sculptures in Richard Meier's light-flooded museum building open up contemporary perspectives on the fragile image of being and invoke organic principles of growth and construction.

Christiane Löhr, who works in Cologne and Tuscany, is one of the most important voices in the current discourse on new, time-related approaches to sculpture. The work show takes up groundbreaking themes in the context of modernism around the artist couple Arp for the 21st century.

Catalogue

The catalogue (German / English, to be published in November by Hatje Cantz Verlag) can be understood as an anthology accompanying the exhibition: In addition to a foreword by Julia Wallner and current texts by Jutta Mattern, Astrid von Asten, and Tiziano Scarpa, it combines essays by various authors on the artist's work from the past decades. It is supplemented by in situ photographs showing the delicate and impressive works of Christiane Löhr in interaction with the light spaces of the museum building by Richard Meier.
