Five times the "true image" of K. O. Götz is impressed frontally onto all the visible sides of the glazed clay cube. In this succession to the mediaeval Vera icon representations it is no longer the Head of Christ, but Man made in the image of God, who is immortalised here authentically and without distortion – a topos to which artists have repeatedly had recourse since the Renaissance, exemplified by the famous Self-Portrait of Albrecht Dürer from 1500.
From 1999 the great Informel painter, who was nearly blind, increasingly produced ceramic works of impressive quality. The traces of his hands, or also of the lines, which are produced using the spatula, follow intuitive-spontaneous and powerful gestures. At the same time, with the impression of his face he writes a representational signature into some of his sculptures.
K. O. Götz was born 1914 in Aachen.
He lives and works in Niederbreitbach-Wolfenacker.
