‘Art heals – it opens paths where language fails.’ – Ulla Hieronymi-Pinnock

For ten years now, people with aphasia – a language disorder caused by stroke or brain injury – have been meeting at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck to paint, create and express themselves artistically. Under the guidance of artist Ulla Hieronymi-Pinnock, a unique meeting place has been created: AphasieArt. What began as an initiative of the Waldbreitbach Aphasia Self-Help Group in collaboration with Hermann Wester and Ulla Hieronymi-Pinnock has long since developed into a nationwide network. Today, other self-help groups – from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to Cologne and Übach-Palenberg to Speyer and Würzburg – are also creating their own workshops as part of AphasieArt. Through their engagement with art, colour and form, participants find new ways of expressing themselves – beyond spoken language.

The Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck has supported AphasieArt since the beginning of this artistic collaboration. The museum supports the group with great commitment by offering guided tours, insights into contemporary art and the works of Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, as well as exhibitions by international artists at the museum. These impulses have a lasting impact on and inspire the artistic work. To mark the anniversary, the Arp Museum is showing a presentation in the Arp Laboratory that brings together works and impressions from ten years of joint artistic practice. The presentation shows how art builds bridges, strengthens self-confidence and enables communication in a different, deeply moving way. The project is also growing digitally: a virtual gallery has been created on the AphasieArt Instagram platform, where works by artists from all over Germany can now be viewed – a lively place of exchange and inspiration.
