Under the theme “Edges” (meaning edges, cuts, margins, and boundaries), students at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts spent a semester exploring silhouettes, paper cutouts, shadow plays, and animated films in an experimental manner as part of Professor Megan Francis Sullivan’s open seminar.
The resulting works continue the diversity of paper as a material and its forms of expression in art: ranging from drawings and prints, collages, and objects to participatory concepts. Thematically, they focus, among other things, on marginalized and vulnerable elements in nature, the artwork as a construct of values, and humanity as both a warlike, destructive force and a being seeking closeness. In the foyer of the classicist railway station building, the students’ works form a delicate interweaving of frames, zones of light and shadow, and views in and out, which also incorporates Hans Arp’s threshold sculpture on the forecourt and the panorama of the Siebengebirge.
