The exhibition Longing for Longing for Utopia. Painting and Sculpture of Romanticism presents around 60 works from the fascinating epoch of the same name, from its beginnings around 1770 to the Neo-Romantic period around 1900. In the chapters ‘Romantic Love’, ‘Dream and Nightmare’ and ‘Back to Nature’, the longings, ideals and utopias of this period are brought to life. Masterpieces by Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Spitzweg, Friedrich Nerly and Karl Friedrich Schinkel illustrate the longing for a soul mate, for a unity of man and nature.
