We work directly with pure pigments. Artists have been painting with red chalk, green earth or ochre since antiquity. We first go to the exhibition Longing for Utopia. Painting and Sculpture of Romanticism and focus in particular on the use of colour. In the paintings of people in the fields or mountains, lake landscapes or in idealised portraits, the colours also express the longing for fairy-tale idylls, for romantic love or the hope of a retreat into nature. A few sketches are made in the exhibition and form the basis and inspiration for our painting with the pigments. It is fascinating to see how the pure colours - applied directly to the paper - can be rubbed into smooth or grainy strokes, spread like a powdery breath or condensed into strong, opaque surfaces. We use pure pigments, in pieces, grated, solid and loose pastel chalks, binders - all finely dosed - and water, and a variety of techniques are possible. We let the precious pigments take effect. And in doing so, we learn how sometimes random effects are created - and how we can incorporate and utilise this process in our illustrations. The workshop is suitable for beginners and advanced students.
