This workshop involves working directly with pure pigments. Artists have been painting with red chalk, green earth and ochre since ancient times. The workshop begins in the exhibition Günther Uecker. The Vulnerability of the World. The relief-like surfaces of Uecker's works create plays of light and shadow and nuances of colour. Nails are like ‘lines drawn in plastic space’ (Uecker). Sketches are made in the exhibition, which serve as a basis and inspiration for painting with pigments. What is fascinating about painting with pigments is how the pure colours – applied directly to the paper – can be rubbed into smooth or grainy strokes, spread like a powdery touch or condensed into strong, opaque areas. Pure pigments (in pieces or ground), pastel chalks (solid or loose), binders – all finely measured – and water are used. A variety of techniques are possible. The precious pigments unfold their effect, sometimes creating random effects. This process can be incorporated into the representation and utilised. The workshop is suitable for beginners and advanced learners.
