11:30 – 17:00 | Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck
Workshop – 2-day - Registration necessary
Picasso is one of the artists who regularly worked with this technique. It is also known as lost plate printing or reduction printing. We print with several colors, but only with one plate. This has the advantage that we Picasso is one of the artists who regularly worked with this technique. It is also known as lost plate printing or reduction printing. We print with several colors, but only with one plate. This has the advantage that we save material; the time required for cutting is less and we also save energy. We save on transfer printing on several lino plates and the storage space for many plates.
The disadvantage of this technique is that at the end of the printing process there is usually only a small area left to be printed on the linoleum plate, which is not worth printing. Hence the name for this technique. And this also means that we start with a print run of at least 5 sheets per color print, preferably 10, in order to get enough good prints in the end. You will learn how to transfer a pattern to the linoleum plate (you can also draw freely on the plate), the cutting process, how to make a sheet for the precisely fitting prints, how to handle the paint correctly, how to rub it off by hand and how to print with the press.
We will visit the current exhibition "der die DADA" to find inspiration for our work, e.g. in the textile designs or graphic works on paper by Sophie Taeuber-Arp.
If you would like to work from templates you have brought with you:
- these should be printed/drawn upside down
- or on transparent material so that you can use the reverse side for tracing
- it is very helpful for this technique if you have already colored your template
- please remember: letterpress printing is not delicate, lines have to be cut wider and the more colors, the more prints
We work with lino inks and a plate size of DIN A5. If you would like to work with larger plates, please bring your own. The maximum size is 30x30 because of the press, so please bring your own dishes, food and drinks for a short break. You can make your own coffee and tea on site and the workshop is suitable for beginners and advanced students.
Participants: minimum 5 people, maximum 10 people
Cost: 100 euros, plus museum entrance fee, incl. material (Linoleum plates, paint, paper)
