On the healing effects of art, music, dance and theatre by and for those affected by the 2021 floods.

Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Alfter/Bonn, together with the University Medicine Essen Foundation and Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe e.V., invites you to the cultural festival ‘How Art Creates Health’ at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck in Remagen on 6 and 7 December 2025. The focus will be on the healing effects of art, music, dance and theatre for those affected by the 2021 floods and the question of how art can help people process trauma – an approach whose importance is also highlighted by current research findings from the WHO.

The festival presents the results of the project ‘kreARTiv – vom Schatten ins Licht’ (kreARTiv – from shadow to light), in which the Institute for Artistic Therapies (RIArT) at Alanus University accompanied around 30 art, music and dance therapy groups with flood victims in the Ahr Valley and neighbouring regions. The experiences of the participants and course leaders are currently being evaluated as part of an accompanying scientific study. The project has produced moving films and works of art – expressions of individual experiences and inner processes. These works from the artistic therapy groups are now being made visible at the cultural festival in the form of a digital exhibition.

Visitors can also look forward to a varied programme of exhibitions, hands-on workshops for adults, young people and children, music, dance and theatre performances, capoeira demonstrations and museum tours. Artists, therapists, researchers and those affected will come together on a panel to discuss how art promotes health. Anyone interested is warmly invited to be part of this community event!
