Kiki Smith's magnificent tapestries unfold a rich cosmos of colours, motifs, themes and details that inspire us to look at these textile works in ever new ways. The accompanying designs on Nepalese paper - individual drawings and prints using a wide range of techniques executed as large-scale collages - form the basis of these captivating tapestries. The complex paper templates were painstakingly converted into digital compositions using a computer programme. After intensive and repeated corrections by the artist, they were finally converted into a digital weaving file so that they could be realised as textile works in a weaving mill in Belgium. In some cases, Kiki Smith subsequently reworked them by accentuating individual sections of selected works, for example with colour, gold and silver threads. Dr Fleischmann-Heck, a proven expert on textile works, will join exhibition curator Jutta Mattern and curatorial assistant Joëlle Warmbrunn on a dialogue tour of the exhibition to talk in detail about the tapestries, their originals and how they were made, and to place them in the tradition of European woven wall hangings. In particular, the connection with textile wall paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries will be emphasised.
