25 Apr 2026

Attention: Please ask Ms. von Ohnesorge whether participation in English is possible.

This workshop involves working directly with pure pigments. Artists have been painting with red ochre, green earth and ochre since ancient times. The workshop begins in the exhibition Really. Art and Reality 1400–1900. The theme of the session is: perception of reality. Just as the artists did in their works, participants will look at what is important to them. And they will then allow this to become art and ‘true’ in their own paintings. A few sketches will be made in the exhibition and will serve as the basis and inspiration for painting with the pigments. What is fascinating about painting with pigments is how the pure colours – applied directly to the paper – can be rubbed into smooth or grainy strokes, spread like a powdery dusting, or built up into rich, opaque areas. The materials used are pure pigments (in small pieces or ground), pastel chalks (solid or loose), binders – all finely measured – and water. A wide variety of techniques is possible. The precious pigments unfold their effect, sometimes creating accidental results. This process can be incorporated into the artwork and utilised. The workshop is suitable for beginners and advanced participants.
