About the exhibition

Entitled Father's Window Werner Klotz's so-called "perception instrument" in the festive hall of the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck has been presenting visitors with a very special view of the opposite shore of the Rhine since 2004.

Related to this complex experiment with surprising and irritating visual experiences is the interactive living cosmos of rotating mirrors and "perception instruments" that Klotz has put on display on the exhibition level of the museum. At the interface between exterior and interior, the artist has integrated the museum's surroundings – the Rhine River and the passing trains and ships – into his work. As the visitors move about they cause the mirrors to rotate, rendering an ever changing constellation of reflected images.

These mechanical and physical processes bear similarities to such works by Werner Klotz as Water and Light Photographs, which feature photographs of stones of diverse shapes and colors underneath the surface of a river in the Canadian mountains. He has meticulously shaped an ever shifting interplay between the flowing water and the reflections yielded on its surface, which vary depending on the time of day and season.

With these poetic, spiritual images Werner Klotz challenges our perceptive abilities yet again, thus extending the inexhaustible world of visual experiences that make up the exhibition.
