About the exhibition

Rendez-vous des amis: Sophie Taeuber – Hans Arp

This year as part of the presentation of the collection we are issuing an invitation to a particularly charming and intimate Rendez-vous des amis. Our artist patrons Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber met in Zurich in 1915. For the rest of their lives from that point onwards they were engaged in a close exchange of artistic views, and in due course they became lovers. A diverse interchange developed, in which they both took different routes towards abstraction.

Hans Arp, »Sophie«, in: Zweiklang. Arp – Taeuber Arp, hrsg. von Ernst Scheidegger, Zürich 1960, S. 44.

»Many of Sophie's pictures are flowers in disguise«

Hans Arp was one of the pioneers of organic abstraction. He derived his flowing language of forms from nature. The wide-ranging oeuvre of Sophie Taeuber, by contrast, was based on the forms of expression of geometric abstraction. It was her artistic aim to combine art and everyday life and to remove the traditional separation of applied and fine art. Repeatedly the two different approaches flowed together in joint works, the so-called duo works. One particular aspect which forms the focus of an exhibition for the first time is the reflection of the art of Sophie Taeuber in Arp's poetic texts, in which he often voiced his admiration for his companion, who for him made "the shining heavens hover down into this life". We invite you to join us in looking forward to this unusual act of homage.
