About the exhibition

A great donation

Collecting and finding, and the deconstruction and recombination of different everyday materials are characteristics of the collage, the artistic technique of "glued" picture compositions. At the beginning of the twentieth century George Braque and Pablo Picasso began to combine fragments of reality according to the random principle. Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp can also be counted among the pioneers of collage, creating the basis for future generations of artists to unite art and reality in their pictures.

The donation to the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck by collector Prof. Gerhard Meerwein, who is based in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, includes 350 works. With its particular focus on the different styles and techniques of collage from 1945 to the present day it demonstrates the relevance of this genre up to and including contemporary art. It is unique in its concentration on this diverse art form and works that predominantly originated in Germany.
