Verloren, chaotisch und aus der Balance geraten

Unsere Besucher*innen haben entschieden: Mit enormem Vorsprung hat „Verlorene Linien auf chaotischem Grund“ (1939) das Rennen in der Wahl um das Kunstwerk der Saison Herbst gemacht.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp ist vielen für ihre rhythmisch geordnete und streng geometrische Formensprache bekannt. Ab Mitte der 1930er Jahre entstehen Bilder, die aus diesen Kategorien herausfallen. Die gewohnt strengen Formen lockern sich auf, Linien scheinen geschwungen und tänzelnd vor dem Bildgrund zu schweben. Das Werk der Saison führt diese Entwicklung fort, wirkt jedoch düsterer und schwerer.

Wie der Titel verrät, sind weder die Linien noch der Bildgrund klar geordnet. Im Gegenteil: Sie sind verloren, chaotisch und aus der Balance geraten. Kuratorin Astrid von Asten verweist hier auf den Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs und die Tagebücher dieser Jahre, in denen Sophie Taeuber-Arp sich kritisch zum politischen Weltgeschehen äußerte. Vielleicht sind die Linienbilder tatsächlich ein künstlerischer Ausdruck ihrer Angst vor dem Krieg und der Zukunft? 1940 flüchteten Sophie Taeuber-Arp und Hans Arp ins französische Exil. Vielleicht sind sie aber auch Produkte einer intensiveren künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung des Künstlerpaares? Hans Arp hat zur selben Zeit sogenannte papiers froisés geschaffen, die ähnlich gestisch daherkommen und diese Deutung nahelegen.

Lost, chaotic and out of balance

Our visitors have decided: By a huge margin, "Lost Lines on a Chaotic Ground" (1939) has won the race for the artwork of the autumn season.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp is known to many for her rhythmically ordered and strictly geometric formal language. From the mid-1930s onwards, she produced paintings that fell out of these categories. The usual strict forms loosen up, lines seem to float curved and dancing in front of the picture ground. This season's work continues this development, but appears more sombre and heavy.

As the title reveals, neither the lines nor the picture ground are clearly ordered. On the contrary, they are lost, chaotic and out of balance. Curator Astrid von Asten refers here to the outbreak of the Second World War and the diaries of those years, in which Sophie Taeuber-Arp was critical of world political events. Perhaps the line paintings are actually an artistic expression of her fear of the war and the future? In 1940, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Hans Arp fled into exile in France. But perhaps they are also products of a more intensive artistic confrontation between the artist couple? At the same time, Hans Arp created so-called papiers froisés, which are similarly gestural and suggest this interpretation.
